Augmented Reality

For anyone that has not heard of Augmented Reality I really think that it is worth checking out. It is the integration of reality and computer generated software creating an almost surreal experience. There are three different types and you can check out the definitions on Wiki. They are:

  1. Head mounted displays - This is the typical virtual reality that we have been told so much about. They are normally incredibly stupid looking headsets that will project images into the eye pieces giving you the feeling of actually being in a virtual world. Comparatively to the others it seems kind of old school. It has been incorporated into fighter pilots helmets allowing them to actually have eyes everywhere. They can actually see through the bottom of their aircraft using cameras mounted on the bottom of their plane.
  2. Handheld displays - These I think are awesome. They use your handheld device, most likey your iPhone or other GPS enabled device to determine where you are and what you are looking at. The device will then use its inbuilt camera to figure out what it is looking at and send the user real time information about it. That probably doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense so check out this app for iPhone by Stella Artois and you will have a better idea of what I am talking about.

  3. Spatial displays - I have no way of even attempting to explain this so here is another example. It was a Campaign done by Saatchi for Woodsworth books.

I reckon we will see this becoming more and more part of our everyday lives. Can't wait!
